The fifth Annual Meeting of the Canadian HIV Cure Enterprise (CanCURE) was held at the IRCM on November 7th and 8th 2019. This research consortium focused on HIV Cure is led by Dr. Éric A. Cohen, Research Professor at the IRCM and Director of the Human Retrovirology research unit. The CanCURE research program is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This year’s meeting brought together close to eighty participants, including 20 basic and clinical researchers, as well as 36 students, postdoctoral fellows and research associates. Members of CanCURE’s Scientific Advisory Board also participated and provided input on the teams' research priorities. In addition, six community representatives, including CanCURE’s two principal knowledge users, were present to provide the point of view of the community living with HIV/AIDS and actively take part in the discussions and exchanges with the scientists.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Guido Poli, M.D. (Professor and Head at the AIDS Immunopathogenesis Unit Division of Immunology, Transplantation and Infectious Diseases, at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University School of Medicine & San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, Italy) presented an overview of upgrading macrophages to a first class HIV reservoir.

In addition, the team's scientific investigators presented the latest progress of their CanCURE research projects. A community and trainee activity took place allowing trainees to give and receive feedback on their knowledge translation skills from the perspective of their peers and a community member. Finally, trainees showcased the results of their work during poster sessions and new this year, three oral flash talks.

In addition to CanCURE’s Annual General Meeting, CanCURE hosted a public session discussing End-of-Life HIV research and the creation of an autopsy biobank, which updated attendees on the challenges and opportunities in HIV Cure research today as well as allow a platform for community members to voice their opinions on the topic.

The CanCURE team wishes to thank the staff of the IRCM for their remarkable work during the meeting and would like to emphasize the efficiency and the professionalism of the members of the IRCM Community who contributed greatly to the success of this important event for Canadian HIV Cure research. Until next year!
